A positive point of view...

Hello!

This is going to be only a short message. I came across an interesting video about the technical revolution the internet and social media is part of. It is a promotion for the book 'Where good ideas come from' by American science writer Steven Johnson. In his opinion, the social media revolution is a big change for us all to share information and come to better ideas. A really positive point of view that I wanted to share after my last post. Interesting and nice to watch! Maybe I will even buy his book to see if I can get better ideas from the internet myself. Have fun watching!

Generation M and the big ‘Social Media Revolution’

Hi everyone!
It took a little time before I had decided what to write about in my new blog post, finally here it is! This and the next post will be about ‘Generation M’. This new generation between 8 and 18 years old is highly influenced in a lot of ways by the growth of social- and new media. This target group interests me because of a project I do with a group of students about designing a suitable interface for children. This post contains a little background information.
The video above is about the ‘Social Media Revolution’ illustrates what changes our media landscape has experienced in the past years and how fast development follow eachother. A very informative and impressive video!

The use of social media and internet among young people grows with the year. An American research centre published the following figures about teenagers using new media. 58% of 12‐year olds owns a cell phone, up from just 18% in 2004. 73% of the American teenagers that use the internet use social network sites. An increase of 18% compared to November 2006. 63% of the teenage internet users go online every day, 36% of them several times a day. Read more figures in the  research report: Social Media & Mobile Internet Use Among Teens and Young Adults.

Also marketeers find new ways to reach children through social media. A good example is the Facebook campaign from cookie brand Oreo. Their goal is to set a world record of Facebook likes. I wonder if they are going to reach their goal…

In the next post I will tell more about the consequences of all these developments.
bye!

Welcome!

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to my blog, this is my first blog post. As you can see from the title I am planning on writing about Online Business Communications. A very broad subject but a field in which a lot is happening these days. I noticed in my job with Clipit, an online media monitoring agency in Nijmegen, that companies are getting more and more experienced in the field of online media. Most companies know a lot better how to analyze and control online presence than a few years ago. As a specialist in online media monitoring it got time for me to be present online myself!

I am not exactly sure where this blog is going, but my goal is to write about an inspiring case in the field of Online Business Communications at least once a week and hopefully startup discussions about them. Subjects that interest me are for example how to deal with information overload from online media, new ways to give a value to online coverage and innovative social media strategies I hear about. Lucky for me and the readers of this blog, half a year ago I started this very innovative master in Communication and Information science in Tilburg! These study and other relevant things I see around me are going to be inspiration for writing the content of this blog.

Have fun reading and leave a comment if you like!

Kind regards,

Kim
